Could it be that one of the beauty industry’s most celebrated tool is damaging the health of your skin? Oh yes, it could, and very well may be doing just that!

Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good facial cleansing brush, and as a practicing Esthetician I use it often in my services. But the daily use of the popular at home facial brushes may be doing more harm than good.

And here’s why….

The spinning facial brush with its many technological features, aims to deep clean and exfoliate the skin. While this sounds amazing, it’s the daily use of the tool that may be causing the most damage to your skin.

No one, and I mean no one, should be exfoliating their skin daily. This is beyond excessive and strips your skin of its natural barrier meant to protect the organ from free radicals, aggressive topical products and the environment. When you weaken your skin’s natural defensive barrier, you are more prone to bacteria causing acne, sensitivity and premature aging.

Beware of the squeaky clean feeling…

Some cleansers could be further exacerbating the issue by stripping the skin of its natural oils meant to keep it moisturized. Cleansers containing parabens, fragrances, synthetic colors, formaldehyde, alcohols, sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate should be avoided. It’s best to use a gentle daily cleanser that doesn’t have exfoliating beads or abrasive agents such as the ONYX STUDIOS, INC. BREATHE + CLEANSER along with your facial brush to avoid over-exfoliation.

Tip: If you are suffering from an active breakout, stop using the brush until the breakout subsides. Continuous use will further irritate the skin and spread the acne to other parts of the face and neck.

How to Use:

Like any other exfoliating product or tool, its best NOT to use more than twice a week. Choose to use your brush on the days when you have the time to properly cleanse the skin and you are not a in rush.

Wet your facial brush with lukewarm water and apply your cleanser to the bristles on the spinning head. Turn on the slowest speed first and start from the chin area and work your way up moving slowly all over the face. Try not to add too much pressure to the brush as this will fray the bristles prematurely. A second cleanse on a higher speed is fine, but never cleanse more than twice in one use. Anything more than that is excessive and damaging.

How To Maintain:

Always remember to properly clean your brush after each use with a mild soap and warm water; and disinfect the spinning head at least once a week. This will prevent the brush from spreading acne causing bacteria to other parts of your face and neck.

Replace your spinning head brush when the bristles have become frayed and worn, this will ensure an effective cleansing for each use.
